inFrequently Asked Questions (iFAQs)
How do I contact you?
If you can figure out this secret code (I know you can do it), you can email me at music [at] allosonic [dot] com.
So what kind of music is this?
In one word, "electronic." In more words, I like listening to "progressive trance" and "melodic trance" artists. But I usually end up with a little offbeat "laptronica" in there, too. (Like I said, "electronic," or "electronica.")
It sounds like some kind of "techno" to me. Is it?
Yes and no. The word techno is often used in a generic sense, covering any electronic-sounding music with a beat. But there is also a specific sub-genre of electronic music that is called "techno." So in the generic sense, this is "techno," and in the specific sense, it is not.
Is "allosonic" a real word?
Even though you won't find it at dictionary.com, it does appear in the Dolmetsch Online Music Dictionary as "allosonic borrowing." Also in this online annotated bibliography about musical borrowing.
Why did you use a band name if it's just you?
In music today, some bands have the name of an individual, some individuals have the name of a band. Even more so in the world of electronic music, so I could end up with several.
Why didn't you put your picture on your website?
I understand that people want to be able to identify with the musician, and not just the music. Please imagine that I'm just the right age, with just the right looks and personality that will allow you to enjoy my music without being embarrassed.
What software do you use?
Everything featured on the home page now was done in Project5 by Cakewalk.
I started out using Kinetic 2, also from Cakewalk. It's perfect and fun to learn on without being overwhelmed with complexity. It's really not meant for full-length songs, but that's what I used for the original 3 Hymns on a Laptop.
I also used a software instrument from E-MU Systems, Proteux VX 2.0. It was bundled with some E-MU hardware. The full version is Proteus X2.
When I finally realized that I was still mixing when I should have been mastering, I found the AAMS Auto Audio Mastering System. It is an awesome tool that I don't think is very well known.
I've got some more software waiting to be opened, but I promised myself I'd finish release the Trinomial project and update this website first.
Where did you get the cool player on the home page?
That is Jeroen Wijering's widely used Flash player, the JW FLV Media Player.
